Part of coming up with a good story is brainstorming ideas, narrowing them down to a few, and finally choosing one. Visualization is how I choose a story idea. The ideas that I can visualize are the ones narrowed down. Then I expand a little on each of these ideas, until I have one that stands out from the rest.
